Gutter clearing in Bolton and across the North West

Moss, leaf litter and silt vacuumed out of gutters, hoppers and downpipe heads so rainwater gets away from the building — most of it done from ground level.

The problem

What a blocked gutter costs you

Gutters fill from above and below at once: leaf litter from overhanging trees, and moss washed down off the roof covering every time it rains hard. Silt binds it together and the run stops draining long before it looks full from the ground.

The water then goes over the front edge of the gutter instead of down the pipe. That is where the dark streaks down render and brickwork come from, and it is why water starts tracking into fascias, soffits and the top of the wall.

Clearing the gutter is only useful if the water can actually get away, so the downpipes and hopper heads are checked as well and the runs are flow-tested where a supply allows. A clear gutter feeding a blocked downpipe still overflows.

This is debris removal and flow restoration. Washing the outside of gutters, fascias and soffits so they look clean again is a separate service.

What the service involves

Gutter clearing removes moss, leaf litter and silt from gutters, hoppers and the head of downpipes so rainwater can get away from the building instead of over the edge of the gutter.

Most work is done from ground level with a vacuum system and camera, with ladder or tower access used where a run cannot be reached safely otherwise.

Our method

How we approach gutter clearing

  1. 01

    Assessment

We check the gutter runs, the type of system and how it drains, and identify anything sagging, split or already leaking.

  2. 02

    Access and protection

Safe access is set up and the ground below is protected from debris.

  3. 03

    Clearing

Debris is vacuumed or removed by hand from the gutters, hoppers and downpipe heads.

  4. 04

    Flow check

Downpipes are checked for blockages and the runs are flow-tested where a water supply allows.

  5. 05

    Clean-up

Debris is bagged and removed, and the area below the work is left clean.

  6. 06

    Inspection and aftercare

Before-and-after camera images are provided where the system is inspected from the ground, and any defects are reported.

What's included

Every gutter clearing visit

  • High-reach vacuum, no ladders needed
  • Downpipes checked for flow
  • Camera footage of each run
  • Often booked alongside roof or render work
  • Stops overflow staining down render, brickwork and windows
  • Reduces the risk of water tracking into fascias, soffits and walls
  • Catches sagging brackets, splits and joint leaks early
  • Usually completed from ground level with little disruption

What affects your quotation

Why we price each property individually

  • The length of the gutter runs and the number of elevations and outbuildings involved
  • Access — whether every run can be reached from ground level or a ladder or tower is needed
  • How much moss and silt has built up, and whether downpipes are blocked as well as gutters
  • Conservatory, lean-to and low-level runs that need a different approach
  • Whether roof moss removal or gutter, fascia and soffit cleaning is wanted at the same visit

Every quotation is prepared for the property in front of us. Tell us the surface, rough size and access and we will confirm the method and the price.

Surface care

Access and system considerations

  • Most properties are cleared from ground level with a vacuum system and camera, which keeps ladder work to a minimum.
  • A run that does not fall correctly will still hold water once it is clear — that is an installation issue, not a blockage.
  • Split joints, sagging brackets and leaking seals are reported with images rather than patched over.
  • Cast iron and aluminium systems are handled more carefully than UPVC, and older paintwork is easily marked.
  • Where roof moss is the source of the debris, clearing alone will not stop it returning each winter.

How we reduce the risk

  • A walk-round inspection before anything is switched on, so existing defects are noted and shown to you
  • Method, pressure and nozzle selected for the substrate rather than a single setting used everywhere
  • A small test area in a discreet spot where the surface is unusual, delicate or of unknown age
  • Adjacent surfaces, planting, air bricks, vents and paintwork protected or avoided as appropriate
  • Anything we find part-way through — a loose slab, a failed joint, a cracked tile — raised with you before we continue

Being straight with you

What cleaning cannot put right

  • Broken brackets, splits and failed joints, which need replacement parts
  • Gutter runs installed with the wrong fall
  • Rotten fascia or soffit timber
  • Blocked or damaged underground drainage

Keeping the result

  • Clear again after leaf fall where the property has mature trees nearby
  • Clear leaf litter and standing debris through autumn — organic matter is what feeds regrowth
  • Book a lighter maintenance visit before growth re-establishes rather than waiting for it to look bad again

Where a surface would genuinely benefit from protection once it is clean and dry, ask about exterior surface sealing.

Before we start

How we plan the job on the day

The right method for the surface, not simply more pressure. Before anything is switched on we look at what we are actually cleaning: the material, the contamination on it, the condition it is already in, and whether there is cracking or earlier repair work that needs treating carefully.

We also check the practical side. An outside tap is preferred so we do not have to run hoses through your home; where an indoor tap is needed, we agree a safe hose route, take the hose out carefully and keep the connection monitored and secure. The water flow affects how quickly our equipment or water tank refills. Access, nearby walls and render, planting and delicate areas are all noted so they can be protected or worked around.

If there is no outside tap, it helps to mention it when you enquire. It is easily worked around, but it is better known in advance than found on the morning.

Photographs and existing damage

A clear record of how we found it

We often photograph the area before we begin — sagging or leaking gutter runs, loose brackets and staining down the wall. It gives an honest record of the property's condition, and it gives you a genuine before-and-after comparison once the work is finished.

If we find a defect, we would rather point it out than quietly clean over it. We will show you what we have found, adjust the method around the weaker area where that is sensible, and if continuing could do more harm than good we will stop and talk it through. Sometimes the right advice is to have another suitable tradesperson look at it first.

We would rather work carefully around a problem than knowingly make it worse.

What to expect

Realistic results from the surface you have

Cleaning can make a very large difference, but it cannot undo age. Weathering, worn surfaces, permanent staining, previous repairs and colour variation may still be visible afterwards. What we aim for is the best sensible improvement from the existing surface, and we will say so before we start if we think the result will be limited.

If the debris filling the gutters is moss coming off the tiles, the roof itself may be the underlying issue. See roof cleaning and moss removal.
