The problem
Why pool surrounds need different handling
A pool surround stays wet longer than any other paving on a property. Splash-out, sun cream residue, leaf tannin and general weathering feed algae and biofilm, and that film is exactly what makes a wet surround slippery at the point where slip matters most — the pool edge.
The materials are often the softer ones. Limestone, travertine, marble and some composite surrounds scar easily, so pressure is reduced and chemistry does more of the work. Porcelain, granite and concrete generally accept controlled pressure. The coping and paving are identified before anything is switched on.
Pool surrounds also bring their own site constraints: pointing and movement joints to check, drainage to keep clear, and cleaning planned so slurry and loosened material are directed into drainage rather than into the water.
The scope is the surround only — coping, paving, steps, thresholds and the immediate terrace. Pool water, liners, waterline tiling, covers and filtration are not part of this service unless separately agreed in writing with a specialist involved.
What the service involves
Swimming pool surround cleaning is the deep cleaning of the hard landscaping around a pool — the coping stones at the pool edge, the surround paving, steps, thresholds and the immediate terrace. Algae, biofilm, sun cream residue, leaf tannin and general weathering are removed so the area looks right and is safer underfoot.
The scope is the surround only. We do not clean pool water, liners, tiled waterlines below the water level, covers, filtration or any internal pool system unless that has been agreed separately in writing with a specialist involved.
Method is chosen after the coping and paving materials are identified. Porcelain, granite and concrete generally accept controlled pressure; limestone, travertine, marble and some composite surrounds are softer and are treated at reduced pressure with more of the work done chemically.

Poolside considerations
- Any surround is slippery while wet, so the area should stay out of use until it has fully dried.
- Despite protection, some water and loosened material can reach the pool; whoever maintains it should check water balance and filtration afterwards.
- Joints that are already cracked or hollow can break down further during cleaning and may need re-pointing.
- A failing sealer often looks patchy once the dirt is gone and may need stripping rather than washing.
- Long-term pool chemistry can etch or bleach some stone; cleaning improves the surface but will not reverse etching, chipping or bleaching.

What cleaning cannot put right
- Chipped, cracked or delaminating coping and paving
- Etching or bleaching caused by pool chemistry
- Loose or badly bedded coping, which needs lifting and re-bedding
- Anything within the pool itself — water, liner, waterline tiling, covers or filtration
Keeping the result
- Keep the surround out of use until it has fully dried, as any wet surround is slippery
- Have the pool's water balance and filtration checked after works close to the water
- Consider sealing porous stone once it is completely dry if you want to slow re-soiling
- Clear leaf litter and standing debris through autumn — organic matter is what feeds regrowth
- Book a lighter maintenance visit before growth re-establishes rather than waiting for it to look bad again
Where a surface would genuinely benefit from protection once it is clean and dry, ask about exterior surface sealing.
Before we start
How we plan the job on the day
The right method for the surface, not simply more pressure. Before anything is switched on we look at what we are actually cleaning: the material, the contamination on it, the condition it is already in, and whether there is cracking or earlier repair work that needs treating carefully.
We also check the practical side. An outside tap is preferred so we do not have to run hoses through your home; where an indoor tap is needed, we agree a safe hose route, take the hose out carefully and keep the connection monitored and secure. The water flow affects how quickly our equipment or water tank refills. We look at where the water will travel, whether there is a suitable drain or gully, and whether anything is likely to pool. Access, nearby walls and render, planting and delicate areas are all noted so they can be protected or worked around.
If there is no outside tap, it helps to mention it when you enquire. It is easily worked around, but it is better known in advance than found on the morning.
Photographs and existing damage
A clear record of how we found it
We often photograph the area before we begin — loose coping, open movement joints, worn stone and previous repairs. It gives an honest record of the property's condition, and it gives you a genuine before-and-after comparison once the work is finished.
If we find a defect, we would rather point it out than quietly clean over it. We will show you what we have found, adjust the method around the weaker area where that is sensible, and if continuing could do more harm than good we will stop and talk it through. Sometimes the right advice is to have another suitable tradesperson look at it first.
We would rather work carefully around a problem than knowingly make it worse.
What to expect
Realistic results from the surface you have
Cleaning can make a very large difference, but it cannot undo age. Weathering, worn surfaces, permanent staining, previous repairs and colour variation may still be visible afterwards. What we aim for is the best sensible improvement from the existing surface, and we will say so before we start if we think the result will be limited.
It is also worth not judging paving while it is still wet. Wet paving looks considerably darker than dry paving, and the same area can look noticeably lighter once it has dried out. This is where the before-and-after photographs help.
The biggest mistake is assuming pressure does all the work. When a mark will not shift, the natural instinct is to get closer with the nozzle, and that is usually where the damage is done: joint sand is washed out, weak pointing breaks up, stripes are left across the surface and softer materials are scarred. Working at a pressure the surface can take, and letting the treatment do more of the work, gives a more even result.
