Pressure is a tool, not a default. We assess the surface first, then choose the pressure, flow and temperature it can safely take — or a gentler method where it cannot.
The problem
Pressure washing suits durable hard surfaces that can take mechanical force: concrete paths and hardstanding, steps, ramps and thresholds, yards and forecourts, bin stores and service areas, and brick or stone walls that are structurally sound. On those surfaces, water pressure lifts ingrained dirt, algae and grease that brushing will not shift.
It is the wrong method on plenty of others. Delicate render, roof coverings, historic and soft brick, and fragile stone are damaged by force, so those are soft washed or cleaned by another controlled method instead. We say so rather than reach for a lance.
The decision is made on site: what the surface is, how sound it is, the condition of mortar, sealant and coatings, and whether pressure directed near gaps, vents or seals risks driving water where it should not go. Pre-treating growth and grease first means less pressure is needed to lift them.
If you already know the surface, the specific pages are more useful than this one: driveways, patios and natural stone paving each have their own method, jointing and aftercare considerations.
Pressure washing is controlled cleaning of hard surfaces that can take mechanical force — paths, steps, yards, walls in sound condition, forecourts and service areas — using water pressure, flow and heat matched to the substrate.
It is not the right method everywhere. Delicate render, roof coverings, historic brick and fragile stone are cleaned by soft washing or another controlled method instead, and we will say so rather than reach for a lance.
Our method
We establish what the surface is, how sound it is and whether pressure is appropriate at all.
Adjacent surfaces, planting, vents, lighting and doorways are protected, and run-off is planned.
Organic growth and grease are treated first so less pressure is needed to lift them.
Pressure, flow, nozzle and — where suitable — hot water from our NII Hot Skid 21LPM system are selected for the surface, working in even passes. Heat genuinely helps on grease, oil, heavy grime, chewing gum, spray paint, paint spills, marker staining and winter work, but it is a tool, not a default, and no stain-removal result is guaranteed.
The area is rinsed, debris cleared and drainage checked before we leave.
We review the result together and advise where a different method would serve the surface better next time.

What's included
What affects your quotation
Every quotation is prepared for the property in front of us. Tell us the surface, rough size and access and we will confirm the method and the price.
Terminology
Most people asking for exterior surface cleaning use whichever of these three terms they grew up with. We are not going to tell you that you have used the wrong word — we care about the surface in front of us, not the label.
The term most often used for cleaning durable hard surfaces such as paths, steps, yards and forecourts, where the substrate is sound enough to take mechanical force.
Used interchangeably by many customers when they describe the same kind of exterior surface clean. It tells us what you want cleaned rather than which approach the surface actually calls for.
Another common way of describing the same enquiry. Whichever term you use, we look at the material, its condition and the result you want before deciding how the work should be carried out.
The approach that suits your property depends on the surface, its condition and the work required — and your quotation confirms the method we consider suitable. Refresh Revive does not apply one aggressive method to every surface: where a gentler or otherwise surface-appropriate approach is called for, the job is assessed and quoted on that basis.
Surface care
Being straight with you
Where a surface would genuinely benefit from protection once it is clean and dry, ask about exterior surface sealing.
Before we start
The right method for the surface, not simply more pressure. Before anything is switched on we look at what we are actually cleaning: the material, the contamination on it, the condition it is already in, and whether there is cracking or earlier repair work that needs treating carefully.
We also check the practical side. An outside tap is preferred so we do not have to run hoses through your home; where an indoor tap is needed, we agree a safe hose route, take the hose out carefully and keep the connection monitored and secure. The water flow affects how quickly our equipment or water tank refills. We look at where the water will travel, whether there is a suitable drain or gully, and whether anything is likely to pool. Access, nearby walls and render, planting and delicate areas are all noted so they can be protected or worked around.
If there is no outside tap, it helps to mention it when you enquire. It is easily worked around, but it is better known in advance than found on the morning.
Photographs and existing damage
We often photograph the area before we begin — cracked or loose paving, loose pointing, previous repairs and heavy staining. It gives an honest record of the property's condition, and it gives you a genuine before-and-after comparison once the work is finished.
If we find a defect, we would rather point it out than quietly clean over it. We will show you what we have found, adjust the method around the weaker area where that is sensible, and if continuing could do more harm than good we will stop and talk it through. Sometimes the right advice is to have another suitable tradesperson look at it first.
We would rather work carefully around a problem than knowingly make it worse.
What to expect
Cleaning can make a very large difference, but it cannot undo age. Weathering, worn surfaces, permanent staining, previous repairs and colour variation may still be visible afterwards. What we aim for is the best sensible improvement from the existing surface, and we will say so before we start if we think the result will be limited.
Where a surface is too soft or too fragile for pressure, the work is treatment-led instead. See soft washing.
